An interactive platform for the IT and ITES industry

Last quarter, the HR Connect team addressed one of the most contentious employee issues of all time - Rewards. While we discussed the shift from purely monetary compensation to actually providing an employee the employment experience, one of the topics we touched upon lightly was Work-Life Balance, a subject that is gaining considerable importance worldwide. So, continuing with the ‘what-employees-want’ theme, this edition is dedicated to the quality of work life.
Probably one of the most over-used phrases in corporate lexicon today is ‘Work-Life Balance’. But that doesn’t lessen the importance and criticality of this concept, especially when it comes to the employees of an organization, and the way they work. While some organizations have already taken concrete steps towards this, by instituting novel measures to take care of their employee satisfaction, yet others are exploring various options to help employees maintain a proper and healthy balance between their work and family, which in turn enables them to perform to the maximum of their potential at the workplace. Over the next few pages, you will see that Work-Life Balance today extends to more than just coffee machines and game rooms at the work place!
In this issue of HR connect, we take a look at the Work-Life Balance initiatives at some of the best employers according to the Hewitt Best Employers India Study 2007, to understand what the steps they are taking/have taken as far as improving the quality of work life is concerned.
We also take a look at the Hewitt point of view on the same, the current international trends in Work-Life Balance, as well as an article on telecommuting, a new and interesting concept pertaining to Work-Life Balance.
As a special feature, we also interviewed Mr. Paul Flanagan, the CEO of Accor Services, Australia to understand the concept of, and his views on Employee Assistance Programmes – a new notion in this field in India.
Here’s wishing you an insightful, enjoyable read!
